The most popular occurance of this was a campaign to get George W Bush ranking number 1 in Google for the term "miserable failure". Many websites around the world place a link to George Bush's biography on the White House website, using the link text "miserable failure". When enough websites do this, Google thinks that the Bush Biography is associated with "Miserable Failure" even though the words never actually appear on the page. If you google search for "miserable failure" you will see George's page at number 1.
miserable failure
The supporters of GW have also done the same thing with "great president", but interestingly enough Clinton appears at number 2, I suspect without any tampering (ie the words "great" and "president" might have actually been used on a page about President Clinton).
So, now that we know this system actually works, I have some examples I would like to try.
Consider these Google Bombs, and feel free to use them on your own website...
