Avoiding Email Spam

An unfortunate part of owning a website is the fact that you need to publish your email address. It's all but a requirement for your customers, however it's also a good way to tell spammers that you are available to be spammed.

Spammers have computer programs that scour the net for new email addresses to add to their database, and chances are, if your email is on your website, then you are in a few spam databases.

There is a simple solution to help avoid this problem (other than removing your email), it's called Obfuscation.

Obfuscation is another word for "encoding" your email, so that the browser can interpret it, but the poorly written spam programs can't. It is by no means 100% secure, because if it were, your customers couldn't see it either. In a couple of years time, Obfuscation may be innefective as the spammers learn this trick, however it's still a good idea, and well worth the 5 mins involved to change your "contact us" page.

I have created a simple page which can obfuscate an email address for you. http://www.harveykane.com/email-obfuscator.php
I recommend doing this if you don't already.
