The above statements are just some of the comments that I have been told over the past two months. Many organisations still consider illicit email to be a "minor" problem or concern to the organisation.
 
Many studies are available on the Internet indicating that corporate organisations incur a number of major costs for spam totalling between NZ$25 and NZ$40 per user per month:

• Loss of Productivity - The costs associated with users wading through spam messages.
• Consumption of IT Resources - The costs incurred by an IT department as spam consumes bandwidth, storage space, and e-mail administrators' time.
• Help Desk Burden - The costs incurred by a help desk when users log incidents.
• Hidden Security risks to the organisation.

There is also the possible legal liability as uncensored messages become a personal hindrance to the viewer in the form or sexual, racial or religious harassment.

Several cases of Internet and e-mail misuse involving sexual or racial harassment have resulted in legal liability lawsuits, costing corporations millions of dollars. Chevron was ordered to pay $2.2 million to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit related to inappropriate e-mail sent to female employees. The e-Policy Institute reports that 27% of Fortune 500 companies have been subject to sexual harassment lawsuits related to inappropriate e-mail or Internet use (Source: Merrill Lynch).
